The advise of the Nobody

August 11, 2008

null

So here is a story that everyone is super familiar with. I am going to take you through a nostalgic route.

High school, 12th standard, board exams are over, you are relaxing in your house, with a hot cup of tea, bajjis and TV. This is the only time after ages when your mom or dad have not told you to study and have not thrown dirty glances when you were watching TV.You are blissfully happy thinking about the next 3 months you are going to spend royally wasting your time and sitting on your bottom doing nothing.

Enter useless-full-of-uncalled-for-advice-mama.

“Enna pa, 12th mudichitiya? (So boy! you are done with your high school?)

You are suddenly awakened from your day dream by this huge person and you immediately sit properly in the couch and try hard to quickly swallow the big piece of pakora from your mouth meanwhile nodding so as to not make it seem like eternity until you give your answer.

“Ammam uncle”(Yes uncle) Still wondering who this guy is.

Your mom then comes in and exchanges pleasantries with him and tells you how she knows him, he is as expected an aunt’ husband’s brother’s uncle or something similar to that. Well basically you dont care.

Not only he is loud and disturbs your perfect evening watching TV,since he is around, you cannot watch your regular MTV, Channel V where there are always near naked women dancing. It just was not manners. So you are forced to switch to Sun TV or worse Sun news to watch a bunch load of crap. So successfully by entering your house, he has screwed your mood.

Then he goes on to your studies. He wants to know all about your scores, right from 12th board results to TNPCEE , to what college you want to what course you want.

So you triumphantly mutter that you want Computer science. You then look at his face and see that every muscle of his face slowly changing to finally end up in a cringing look which is as scary as Vijayakanth smiling. So obviously you are scared and wondered if you said something blasphemous or if you accidentally changed to MTV.

“Enna pa, Why do you want to do CSE, the market is down no” he says.

You blink your eyes as obviously you are not quite clear as to what market he is talking about. What do vegetables and computer science has to do with each other . Immediately your mind wanders towards the potato your mom promised to make today only to come back to the crazy old man talking again.

“THe computer industry is down my lad. You wont be able to find any jobs. Dont take CSE or IT” rambles our all-knowing nobody.

“But I have always wanted to do CSE and I like programming and everything” you say in a weak feeble attempt to try and speak back to an elder. Now we all know how blasphemous that is.

Your mom then throws you a ‘listen to elders’ look. After 16 years of being in a Tam-Brahm house, you should almost expect this look. You get that look 10 times a day if not more.

“You should do ECE pa. That is the course that has more scope today. See if you do an ECE you can get an IT job and also do masters in America if you want . With ECE you have cross functional advantages pa. Don’t do just because you like it, you should also think about what will get you job no” our well equipped nobody gives free advice, the only thing that comes free really.

So here comes someone, completely ruins your evening, eats the remaining pakoras your mom made for you and confuses you on your future life ,altering plans! Now he has made you think! THe one thing you did not look forward to do the whole of your summer.

I have heard this take ECE, you have cross functional advantage, you can do anything you want mambo jumbo too many times when I told people I wanted to do computers. I am taking nothing away from ECe guys, if it excites you , that is what you should do and not even think twice. ECE was never my cup of tea so i decided to not heed to the nobody’s advice and went my own way.

Considering its the time of counseling, let me just ask all these nobody’s who throw away free advice to everyone who seems to have an ear attached to them.”How many ECE guys get to work on electrical companies? 1 or 2 in a college.Everyone gets absorbed in to TCS, Infosys or one of the other mass recruiting IT giant. So is the work that they do there electrical or electronics. Nope. I am sorry , you code!

In that case why not learn coding! If you go to do masters, that is an entirely different ball game, because you are obviously interested in studying more of the subject.

So please dont buy the whole BS about doing ECE because the industry is down. Even if you do ECE and industry is down, you wont get hired as you will get placed in an IT giant in India!

And btw I really hope people who still profess allegiance to the dont do CS as market is down try and explain to me who is having the last laugh ! Cause I sure did.

PS. Nothing aginst ECE or EEE , I have a bunch of friends who love those subjects and who are rockstars in it. The post was only for those who were forced in to taking ECE when thier heart was some where else.

Frankly, there were too many of those useless-full-of-uncalled-for-advice-mama’s one had to encounter after their 12th ! That pakora thing was hilarious :P ha ha …

  • 3. Shankar  |  August 11, 2008 at 7:17 pm

    awesome article.. hilarious :D

  • 4. Juggie  |  August 11, 2008 at 7:19 pm

well, my heart said SVCE IT while I took Sathyabama ECE…..could totally relate to what u have written….

but, no regrets at all…..sathyabama gave me some really valuable friends….and Infy….and ppl in Infy…..(Infy never went to SVCE for hiring that year)…..

  • 5. Vishwa  |  August 11, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Totally identify myself with your post. My case was similar to Juggie’s. My heart wanted SVCE Mech and I ended up doing EE at Crescent! Not that I regret what I had done. But the part about “Mama” was funny!

  • 6. Karthik Balasubramanian  |  August 11, 2008 at 8:32 pm

tell me about it.. maama’s a vidu.. road la yaara paathaalum advice..

even maligai kadai owner gave me advice cause he son was doing ECE. I was almost brain washed into choosing ECE or EEE.. I was dead scared that I was gonna fail every circuit test cause I never understood the flow of electricity ever..

  • 7. Jagdeep  |  August 11, 2008 at 11:26 pm

haha.. nice one. I hate these mama’s too. And they eat all your pakora’s also. :D

  • 8. Harish  |  August 12, 2008 at 2:01 am

    ROTFL!

Not sure about CSEians, but surely ppl who took ECE owing to some fat mamas are obviously going to be kicking themselves after reading this. :P

And yeah…tell me about that “behave-your-elders” look. As a prankster, I always got that from my parents….and relatives….and teacher….ok…basically everyone :P

    But this one…wow…was super cool.

Hope I dont turn into one boring mama one day :(

There are two points you are bringing out here, are they not?

The first being that in today’s market, no one, but almost no one gets to work in the field they have chosen in. All ECE, EEE, Mech, Civil, Metallurgy, Chemical, CSE and IT are getting into so called coding companies. Is there a point in this mass migration. Well, that is called the job part.

Second is that people are to take the subject that they like. Let me ask you here, how many people have the sanity to take subject that they like. I am not sure, but how much of 12th standard subjects give you a feel for what engineering is all about. Everyone has a vague idea at best about what engineering is. Then it is a gut instinct, a whole lot of well meant advice thrown in, even more of peer discussions of the type, ” Machan, enna pandradhu-nae theriyala da.” (Dude, I do not have a clue what to do)

In the end, I guess that even though there is a sense of achievement in doing what one likes, there is also something to be said about those who heeded the advice of the advice mama and took up something and excelled in it, not because they wanted to, but because they had to.

The more I age, the more I understand what my biology teacher told me (a cliche) If you dont get what you love, love what you get.

A die hard biology fan is happy as a Credit Risk Analyst post MBA Fin post EEE. I guess that Frost was right, each road is a fork and each path is a choice. You make a choice, you live with it.

    Liked the narrative though..

    - It is hard to choose after 12th, you are just 18, goddamnit! No wonder educated mamas, thathas, kollu-paattis, random onnu-vitta-chitthappas wielded such influence.

    - Vijaykanth has a nice smile. He’s smart too ( he didn’t become an engineer!)

    - Last laugh, eh? Looks like HCL was’nt acidic enough! (yeah, yeah, kill me later)
I guess we all do what we have to do, to get to do what we want to do (the second clause, one guesses, is what you are doing now ).

    - There are tons of folks who took CSE, and regretted it.
In fact lot of folks in SVCE-CSE would be wherever they are today regardless of what they did in SVCE.

first of all, the pic, the eternal dilbert boss… made me laugh!!!

I remember meeting such absolutely O.Cla advice kodukkura mama’s too when i completed my 12th…. they even troubled me the college that i was supposed to join

its really sad how loads of our decisions are influenced by the society as such….but u know what this post also made me miss pakoras!!! :-(

  • 12. Divya  |  August 13, 2008 at 4:57 am

Sigh… been there heard that… still hearing it only its coupled with “nano technologykkuthaan scope irukungra”. These people can’t tell Tata Nano from Ipod Nano. These folks are genetically programmed to give unsolicited advice!

  • 13. Preethi  |  August 13, 2008 at 5:43 am

WOW! Awesome post. :) Can so totally relate to it.

I was listening to such stories even after i got admitted into UG abroad and began my coursework. Before i could let anyone else brainwash my parents that its a girl child-going abroad… when i might as well study in a college next door and get placed in IT.. i flew away.. Tell those mama’s about your ambition and dream job… they are like.. thats for big shots!!! Maniacs! They disgust me.

  • 14. Meena  |  August 13, 2008 at 1:49 pm

    LOL!!

I could thoroughly relate to it. Infact, soon after my 12th std board exams, one of my uncles suggested that I shd not do Engineering and that I shd stand out from the crowd (for what good??) by doing a PhD in Chemistry (I have no idea why he chose Chemistry.. prob he loved that subject !).

And, one of my teachers at school, felt that I wud be successful as an interior designer…

    Funny ppl!

But I was determined and chose IT.

At the end of the day, what matters is doing what you love… or in the worst case, loving what you do!

  • 15. dhivya  |  August 13, 2008 at 1:55 pm

yes, it seems like everyone has somethin to say when u are makin such decisions… and whether you ask for it or not, they are gonna say it! :)

  • 16. nivik  |  August 13, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    @ All

Like many of you have said, the problems are not with people throwing away advise. The problem is 2 fold.

    1. With people not even knowing you and just throwing advise to just to show off that they know something and to influence you . You, about whom they probably wont even remember in 2 days

2.The fact that they give stupid advice. They are not masters in the field and do not have any kind of innate ability to foresee the future. Its pretty much something half baked they have heard from others. What bothers me a lot is”you don’t know how different IT is from the two English alphabets that make up the word , and you are trying to turn someone’s life upside down and worst act smug about it”

And to respond to A’s and Jayesh’s critic, the question is not for “So do you know what you want in 12th?”. Trust me , many do. Don’t underestimate 16 year olds. Because a few of us did not know does not mean its the same case with others. And even if you dont, it does not warrant half baked idiots to come and tell us what to do with our life. Its important to find the right people , talk to them and then make a choice. So please at no point will I think an argument favoring these guys makes sense.

  • 17. Vinod  |  August 13, 2008 at 10:18 pm

hahaha…nice read…u wil never fal short of vetti mamas tryin to confuse u and most importantly ur parents (in most cases sponsors)…went thru the same for undergrad and the same for Master’s as well…”never heard of MIS…jobs from us are comin to india…blah blah”

The best I got was…”Padhai mein kya hai. 2-3 saal masti karke pitaji ke business mein lag jaao” (Whats to gain from studies? Enjoy life for 2-3 years and join Dad’s business)!!!

  • 18. Srinath  |  August 14, 2008 at 12:16 am

a little un-nivi-ish post… missed that big build up and the twist at the end!!but i really liked tht desc of the uncle and looks of the tam-brahm mom!! and also superb use of tanglish!!!

  • 19. Suchitra  |  August 14, 2008 at 12:17 am

If a 17-year-old has really decided that Image Processing is his life and soul, and a degree in ECE is what he really wants next to the pakoras, then would he be fazed by all the free advice? I am not being sarcastic; the truth is when you are so set on something you stop bothering about what people tell you. I defended a maverick decision to do a course with almost nil job opportunities after B.Tech in an unheard of engineering college because at that point of time I was convinced that that was the sanest thing to do. This was based on my interest, talking to a couple of experts in the field and talking to the people at the institution. But the question is, if you are allowing the advice mamas and mamis to sway you, how firm are you about your likes and dislikes. And frankly it is not very easy to be firm about liking or disliking something you have almost a zilch idea of…how many freshers can give a clear definition of why CSE and IT are different streams when almost 80% of their subjects overlap?

The thing with engineering is, it has become some kind of a basic qualification nowadays…everybody from the boss to the guy who serves him the tea is a BE. How many of these people are really ‘engineering’ something, or even wanted to at any point in life is a question. This kind of engineering is just another day at college…friends, canteen, gossip, copying assignments, fighting, sleeping in class, cramming for tests, placements and off. BE becomes something you need to do if you want a coding job, and people wants a coding job because it pays. So if that’s all one wants out of the engineering experience,a degree, does it really matter what you study!!

And a word for the people who give the free advice…most of them are only trying to share their experience (like you did in the post!:)) If we know that they know nothing and are basically trying to show that they are know-it-alls, well, ok. “Seri, mama. Neenga sonna correct-a daan irukkum.”

  • 20. Nivi  |  August 14, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    Dear Suchi,
The point somehow gets lost somewhere. The whole idea was to portray with comic undertones how people who have absolutely no interest in you just give you crappy advice!

And it by no way means you are getting influenced by their advice. Its just that momentary irritation that you get that I am trying to portray. For all the zero job prospect subject that you chose to have, I am sure you would have spent your life regretting had you not done it. Well at the end it all boils down to your choice and that is something you have live with. You can’t blame the mama’s or anyone else, but just you for making the choice.

And no, the one’s who throw free advice don’t really share their experience, a lot of them like the character in this post is just know it all wannabe and wants to show off and in that way tried to spoil your and maybe worse your parents minds. My whole point is if you don’t know what you are talking about, please learn to keep mum. Its amazing how non invasive it is!

  • 21. CM-Chap  |  August 15, 2008 at 1:08 am

Hmm slightly diff post from you.

Neverthless, whole of 12th std life came in my eyes… Everyday 1 uncle… oops.. Let them all go to hell.

    thanks dude

it’s just so much background noise… just hear it and then do your own thing… i have n uncle who said why bother with engg at all?do a C programming course and get job.the sarcasm was lost on me… lol… i sure have uncles i wish would keep the hell out of my life..
but then i also have n uncle who ran around all over mumbai with me trying to find low rent art galleries that don’t ask for ‘qualified’ artists….no free advice, just unconditional support for a seemingly lost cause…
it takes all kinds i guess… u just learn to keep the good …and ask the rest of the planet to go fly a kite.
p.s : the mamas will always think they know best and are specially enlightened. fact is, we all think that way. can’t really blame them.

  • 25. Matangi  |  August 23, 2008 at 5:22 pm

It really doesn’t matter. There is no difference between all these ‘different’ streams of specialization, here in India, and especially in Namma Ooru. Because even if someone is going to educate us as to why we need to study concepts like say, triple integration etc. before starting the core subjects, we would still not care. Because the marks and the jobs are the ones that matter to us. Whether we get those marks by mugging up the text and even the equations and whether we earn a huge salary by doing a clerks job – just doesn’t matter to us. As long as we get degrees and money. There is no difference between us and people who make fake certificates. I mean every word in the previous sentence.
